The Sullivan Families
of
Salamanca and Jamestown, New York
(Surnames: Sullivan, Deane, McCarthy, Kingston)
Michael Sullivan was born in Drimoleague in 1833, the son of James Sullivan and Julia Carthy. His parents lived in the townland of Angram, per Drimoleague/Drinagh RC parish registers. In January 1861, Michael married Susan Deane, the daughter of Robert Deane and Mary Kingston, both of Drimoleague.
Michael and Susan had two children in Drimoleague, James and Daniel, before moving to England in the mid-1860’s, and then to Salamanca, NY in 1869/70, where they established residence, and remained for the rest of their lives. Michael worked on the railroad in Salamanca, which was booming in the 1870s. Two of his sons, Daniel and Jeremiah moved to nearby Jamestown, NY, had families, which in subsequent generations have spread out across the United States and Canada.
This genealogy covers the descendants of Michael Sullivan and Susan Deane.
Based on the census records of Salamanca, New York, it is clear that other members of the Sullivan and McCarthy families of Drimoleague also came to Salamanca. Though not proven, Michael probably had a brother – Jeremiah – that came to Salamanca. The two lived next to each other in 1870. And living next to both of them is a McCarthy family.
No doubt, some members of the Sullivan family stayed in Drimoleague. The parish registers and Griffiths Valuation strongly suggest that Michael had other brothers: Daniel and Andrew. So far, no evidence is found that these two came to Western New York state.
