The Hourihan and Keane Families

My Great Grandfather was John Hourihane and he married Mary Keane. They changed their name to Howard when they moved to theU.S., but I don't know why.
They had ten children, nine girls and one boy who became my Grandfather, Dr. Timothy John Howard.
We would LOVE to know if anyone knows anything about our family and why they left.
There is a memorial to my Grandfathers in the middle of Drimoleague Village. He was killed in Bantry in 1922.
I was in Drimoleague once to see my cousin Mick Keane. We had a wonderful time and it was like a dream. I hope to hear frome someone soon.
