O'Briens, Reillys, and Hayes, from Drimoleague

I am looking for any information on O'Briens, Reillys, and Hayes, from Drimoleague.  I have just returned to the USA from Ireland and found Con O'Reilly's home it was deserted.   I was told to contact a senior gentleman by the name of McCarthy but ran out of time. Any help would be great.

Sincerely yours,

John Hourihane  Mary Keane

My Great Grandfather was John Hourihane and he married Mary Keane.   They changed their name to Howard when they moved to the U.S., but I don't know why.
They had ten children, nine girls and one boy who became my Grandfather, Dr. Timothy John Howard.
We would LOVE to know if anyone knows anything about our family and why they left.
There is a memorial to my Grandfathers in the middle of Drimoleague Village. He was killed in Bantry in 1922.
I was in Drimoleague once to see my cousin Mick Keane. We had a wonderful time and it was like a dream. I hope to hear from someone soon.

Sincerely yours,
Mary Anne Smith - USA  (30 March 2008)

Margaret Jane Roycroft & James Roycroft &  Eliza (Roycroft) Love

I have been looking for the one missing link of my grandmother Margaret Jane Roycroft's (daught. of James Roycroft & Eliza Connell) siblings.

James Roycroft had a farm at Dunkelly, Goleen, the Mizen Peninsula. Eliza (Roycroft) Love was the sister my grandma talked about the most and I have been searching for what happened to her for 6 years now, I am at a brick wall, and I am hoping you might be able to help me.

I cannot locate the death date or what happened to this sister.  I know that Eliza's husband, Richard Love, was from Clouncugger, Caheragh.  He died on 6 Feb, 1930 and was an ex Royal Navy pensioner.

I know that Eliza was alive in 1935, per a letter, and feel strongly that she was still alive in 1944.

The only other thing that may help is that the family was Church of Ireland, yet had an interest in the Methodist Church and we have two letters from circuit Methodist Minister, Wm. Clarke dated 1887, who was based at Schull.

I cannot locate it on any map, but can you tell me about where Clouncugger, Caheragh might be on a map and do you know what church or church cemetery I might contact which might have records?  Of course, I have no guarantee that Eliza remained at Caheragh.

As a side light, a Wm. Kingston - Solicitor, signed my great-grandfather James Roycroft's Will in 1916.  He died in Sept. of 1921.

I would appreciate any information or assistance that you may have, and I would be grateful if you would pass it on to Micheál as per his details above.

Thanks much for any help you might give!

Patrick Joseph Canty & Ellen Mary O'Donovan

I made my first trip to Ireland a year ago, but unfortunately was unable to travel to Drimoleague to research my great-grandparents. If anyone has any information for me I would be very grateful. Hopefully I will be able to return and visit Drimoleague in person Ireland is truly beautiful, and everyone was so friendly and helpful!

My father's maternal grandparents were born in or near Drimoleague in the mid-1800s. They were Catholic, and I did research records at the National Library of Ireland.

Patrick Joseph Canty - born around 1838, possibly a blacksmith's helper.

Ellen Mary O'Donovan - born August 1847.

They probably emigrated to the United States around 1865 or so. They ended up in San Francisco, where my grandmother was born in 1875. (Darn! - If only she had been born in Ireland I could obtain Irish citizenship!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated - thank you!
Sincerely yours,

John Collins & Catherine Young. Their son Jeremiah Collins, Drimoleague, Cork)

I would love to correspond with the descendents of John Collins (b. Drimoleague, Cork) & Catherine Young (b. 1825, Drinagh, Cork). Their son Jeremiah Collins (b. June 11, 1857, Drimoleague, Cork) is my great-great-grandfather.
He emigrated to the United States and died in Branford, Connecticut. The family land in Connecticut centered around the home on Pine Orchard Lane, near Collins Drive.
Jeremiah Collins' son was Jeremiah J. Collins, who married Alice Weisheit. Jeremiah J. and Alice were the parents of Jeremiah F. Collins, who married Blanche Gutfinski and gave birth to five children in Brandford, Connecticut.

In addition to the Jeremiah Collins who was born in 1857 and emigrated to the U.S., John Collins and Catherine Young had eight other children -- Daniel (b. June 8, 1852), John (b. Oct. 19, 1853; d. Jan. 23, 1933), Patrick (b. Oct. 1, 1855), Catherine (b. Jan. 2, 1863 in Shadwell, Middlesex, England), Tim (b. 1867 in Kentucky), John T. (b. 1870), Sarah (b. 1871) and Michael E. (b. 1873).

Thanks for any information you could provide!

James Stewart & Patrick Sheehan

Hi.
I have ancestors from Ireland who on the 1881 census were wrongly transcribed as coming from 'Minories'.

I'm convinced that they came from somewhere that sounds the same, so I wonder if it was in fact Meenies. Do you have any record of a Stewart family in the 1870's? James Stewart was a bookbinder originally from Scotland and his wife Catherine was the daughter of a ropemaker called Patrick Sheehan. They arrived from Cork City around 1869 and by 1879 they had moved to London. James was a bookbinder born around 1848 and Catherine was a little older. Their children were Stephen John, Kate, Sarah and James or George.
I do hope you have something. Thanks in advance.

Paul Barton,

Hourihan / Howard family

I ran into your website when I was researching the Hourihan family hame. My GGrandfather was John Patrick Hourihan from Caheragh, very close to Drimoleague. He moved to Lynn Mass near Boston and married my GGMother, Hannah Laffey. They had 8 children who survived. Upon his early death in 1899, she changed all of their names to Howard.

My research (including discussions with living cousins on East coast of USA) indicate that she arrived in USA at early age of 4 years old. She saw herself as American and wanted to be more employable in Boston area. The entire family worked in shoe factories in that area before and after John Patrick's death except Hanah, who kept house.
In any case, they apparently selected the name from the town directory, Hourihan and Howard are listed next to each other if you think about it. I understood that there were no offspring from any but my Grandfather, John Patrick Howard, who was born in 1890 in Lynn Mass.
Sounds like a coincidence, but Caheragh is on the road from Drimoleague to Skiberreen, so quite a coincidence.

Best wishes,

Patrick Howard - Madison Avenue, El Cajon, CA USA (06th July 2009)

Timothy Collins & Mary “Bridget” Linehan (various spellings) Collins Family to USA 1846/47

Hi Drimoleague.Com

Trying to locate Timothy Collins’ family emigrating to Boston, USA in 1846/47. Timothy married Mary “Bridget” Linehan (various spellings) Timothy’s parents unknown – Mary Linehan’s parents were Jeremiah and Mary (?) Linehan. Other Collins relatives emigrating to USA in 1846/47 stated they were from Drinagh and Leap.

Hi Drimoleague.Com

I came across your web site on Drimoleague this morning. I wonder if you can help me? I'm trying to find a photo of the old RIC barracks at Drimoleague; attacked and (I believe) destroyed in February 1921. I visited the town last year but could find only the present day Garda station rebuilt on a new site. Do you happen to know where the building was located, and if a new building exists on its site now?
As I'm trying to trace photos of all RIC barracks in the Cork and Kerry areas then anything else you may come across in this line would be of interest to me also. Many of the old buildings were replaced or relocated in the 1930's by new Garda stations; so local knowledge is always a great help here.
Many thanks
Peter Mc - (august 2009) - Liverpool (please send any response to info@drimoleague.com)
