| Drimoleague, on route 586, nestles peacefully on the banks of the River Ruagagh, which is a tributary of the Ilen River, which flows into Skibbereen. Drom-Dha-Liagh is Irish for the "Ridge or Back of Two Flagstones". A few hundred yards from the Village is the Famine Memorial on the site of the Famine Pit. The old Village of Drimoleague was referred to as Bothar Srufawn which is Irish for "The road of Srufawn" called after Saint Srufawn. It was situated on both sides of the rock road, due North of the present Village. In the present Village we have Tobar Srufawn, which is Irish for the "Well of Srufawn" and also Droichead Srufawn which is Irish for "The Bridge of Srufawn". The top of the Rock, in Irish, "Barr na Carraige", is a lofty eminence a quarter of a mile North of the Village. It was here that the "Big Fair" was held on September 25th. Tradition relates that Saint Finbarr passed through the "Rock" on his way to "Gougane Barra". Up until 1879 the "Big Fair" was held here. The "Fair" was subsequently transferred to the Village and is still held annually. During one such "Fair Day" on the "Rock", O'Donavan Rossa visited to enrol men in the "Fenian Movement". He was instrumental in preventing a very well organised faction fight, for which the Fairs were famous. |
